A great turnout and a learning curve for the Museum - thankfully all things went well!! Photo courtesy of Keith Andrews
Tea break! A very warm evening so good to have a break and get some fresh air - we even had a light shower of rain to freshen everyone up! Photo courtesy of Keith Andrews
The Visitor Centre has had a long and sometimes troubled histor, but is now a credit to all the hardwork of the Volunteer team who toiled on this project for over a year. It now offers a fantastic, atmospheric structure that can be used for many purposes.
First Visitor Centre Talk Takes Place - Monday 22nd June
On the evening of Monday 22nd June 2026, an historic event took place for the Museum project.
Our Visitor Centre has been rebuilt over the base of the former Station Headquarters Offices, very much mirroring the structure that used to house the Commanding Officer's office, along with the necessary support staff. We're sure back in the day the offices would have reverberated to many conversations about many topics, before falling silent as the 384th left in the summer of 1945 to move overseas. Over 80 years later, once again a crowd gathered to listen to information about the 384th.
This time, we're reflecting back on the history of the airfield, the missions of the 384th and the stories of the personnel and aircraft that called Grafton Underwood 'home' between 1942 and 1945.
The talk and picture show was presented by Matt Smith, himself a 'veteran' of many talks in the Village Hall. We had around 50 visitors with us on the evening, with the Visitor Centre itself having been repurposed into a venue for a presentation from being an exhibition centre just two days earlier.
Our thanks to everyone that came along on the evening and supported us, we hope it was enjoyable. For sure, this is the first in many more talks that the Visitor Centre will host in the future.
Keep checking our 'Events' page on our Museum website for future talks, and all our other activities that are planned in for the coming months.
