Did you know the base used to have dogs and cats adopted by the squadrons? - my dad used to work up there a handyman and he said they were everywhere. I've sent you a picture he took of one of them - he said it was a moody old thing!

A treasured keepsake
Great Aunt Maud married an airman from Grafton Underwood
I have recently discovered that a Great Aunt of mine (Maud) lived local to Grafton Underwood during the war and went to the dances on base when they collected all the local lasses and took them home afterwards.
At one of the dances Maud met an airman called Reg, think his surname was Bayliss, and their romance blossomed. The family remember that she spent the rest of the war fretting every time a mission went out and listening for the planes to return.
He was lucky and both him and their romance survived the war and she ended up marrying Reg and moving to the States.

Reigate Crash
The B17 crashed on Reigate Hill on a Saturday evening in the fog. People heard it, but no-one saw it. A sudden crash and fiery glow on the hillside indicated something terrible had happened.
Judy Smith was first on the scene, and found wreckage everywhere. She later told my mum all about the incident.
